With one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the word, all Australians have a role to play in protecting the welfare of animals and the community. The team at Thornleigh Vets has a variety of initiatives to help ensure that people and pet interactions are always as safe and positive as possible.
As a senior veterinarian, mother of two young children, and pet owner, Dr Prue Honson has a particular interest in the special relationships between animals and people. Prue believes that education is key in ensuring that the welfare of pets and everyone they interact with is protected, and takes a proactive role in teaching the community about responsible pet ownership and living safely with and around animals.
Would you know what to do in an emergency involving your pet, or how to provide animal first aid? Minutes can be crucial if your pet is sick or injured, therefore we recommend that all owners and pet industry workers learn basic pet first aid. Thornleigh Vets’ Dr Prue and Head Nurse Nikki, host a 3-hour workshop on pet first aid so you can learn how to deal with pet emergencies until you can get to a vet, and to manage minor issues at home.
In the first quarter of 2019 there were 1,242 dog attack incidents reported to NSW council, and of these 95 were incidents involving children, with half sustaining serious injuries. A worrying statistic is that 77% of sustained dog bites are from a dog owned by a victim’s family or a friend! The team at Thornleigh Vets is passionate about reducing this number to zero by educating pet owners and their children on the safest way to act around dogs.
The team at Thornleigh Vets is available to present to schools and community groups on a variety of subjects, such as dog park etiquette, how to meet and interact safely with dogs, pet first aid, how to choose the right boarding facility for your pet, pet ownership and choosing pets, and pets in strata title properties. Dr Prue is Stop the 77 accredited, provides training materials tailored to the needs of the audience, and takes a relaxed and participative approach with all presentations which are provided as a community service.
